I’m a sucker for drugstore foundations. They’re so affordable I always get sucked into the 3for2 offer and waste yet more money on products that, more often than not, disappear from my oily face in seconds. Rimmel Lasting Finish Breathable Foundation comes with the promise of being lightweight, yet having the ability to last for 24 hours. The only foundation I’ve tried that lasts longer than 4 hours is Estée Lauder Doublwear, but that definitely isn’t lightweight.

Always game for testing out wild beauty industry claims, I spent my money and got both the Foundation and concealer to see if they live up to their promise. Here are the main features

  • Light to Medium coverage
  • Spf 20 in the lighter shades, spf 18 in the darker shades
  • Satin finish
  • Long wearing- up to 25 hours
  • Lightweight liquid feel that moisturises and allows the skin to “breath”
  • The foundation comes in 17 shades, the concealer in 5 shades
  • A bargain at £8.99 for the foundation and £5.99 for the concealer
  • Available from Superdrug

The foundation comes in a glass bottle with a stick applicator (just like the Clinique Beyond Perfecting Foundation). Some might find it off putting to have to apply foundation with a sponge on a stick, especially since comes in contact with the skin and there’s no way of cleaning it. To apply you have to dab the product on before blending. I have used the Real Techniques Buffing Brush and a silicone beauty blender and it blends into the skin effortlessly.

Rimmel Lasting Finish Breathable Foundation has a water like texture. You need to be careful taking the applicator out or it’ll pour all over the shop. To me it is reminiscent of The Ordinary Serum Foundation. It sets much better than Serum, which is a huge plus, it doesn’t transfer once it’s dried down- no brown marks on your phone screen. Rimmel also does Lasting Finish foundation (that’s not breathable) so that’s a little confusing.

The finish of Lasting Finish Breathable is super natural, real skin, semi dewy. The coverage is medium, it doesn’t cover the worst of my pigmentation. I’m happily at a place with my skincare where I no longer feel the need for full coverage in the daytime, so I’m cool with medium coverage.

Longevity wise, it’s good. Quite often with foundation, after a few hours it’s starting to wear and break up with my oils. Rimmel Lasting Finish Breathable doesn’t do that, it doesn’t control my oils so I do look glowy but I think it gives a really natural look as the day wears on (no foundation will last 24 hours, that’s nonsense). I don’t look in the mirror halfway through a day’s wear and find it has all collected into my lines.

The colour I went for, shade Classic Ivory 101 is perfect for my fair medium NW25 skin. So perfect, the foundation is barely perceptible.

I’m not as sold on the Breathable concealer in all honesty. It has a little sponge dispenser through which the product squirts out, which is no use to man nor beast. It’s too small and hard to blend the product. It looks like the Maybelline Time Eraser but it’s not as big and soft. In any case, it can’t be washed, so I don’t like it.

The actual concealer gives a good medium coverage, it nixes the blue discolouration under my eyes. It doesn’t cover my dark pigmentation fully. I’m not keen on the finish either, it sets to look a bit shiny plasticy, not pleasing on the old crow’s feet.

The shade I went for looked the closest to my colouring was Light 200. It turns out to be a bit yellow for me, triple boo.

You can see in the middle picture with just foundation, any redness looks better, some of my pigmentation is concealed but you can still see undereye blueness. It looks like I’m not wearing foundation to my eye. In the bottom picture the concealer has done away with the undereye darkness.

Rimmel Lasting Finish Breathable Foundation and Concealer- Key Points

I love the foundation. Couldn’t be more pleased with it. Rimmel Lasting Finish Breathable has a natural real skin appearance and is a great day time foundation. Thoroughly recommend purchasing for anyone who doesn’t want full coverage or a full on makeup look. I don’t have dry skin so I can’t be sure, but I reckon it would work with any skin type. It’s affordable and has a nice natural finish, if you can get a good shade match and don’t require full coverage- you should buy- 8/10.

The Rimmel Lasting Finish Breathable Concealer, I can live without. The shades lean yellow, which is fine if you’re warm toned. The finish is shiny and a bit plastic looking. I’m not a fan of the hard little sponge applicator either. It does last well and the coverage is ok. Sorry Rimmel, the concealer only gets 5/10.
