Winter Haircare Routine

How to Season Proof Your Haircare this Winter

Winter has it’s own specific haircare issues. It’s cold, windy and wet outside and dry and warm inside. It’s frizz central, unless you’ve got some great products to help lock the moisture in. There are particular haircare ingredients that will help reduce the ravages of winter, as well as extra steps you can add to your routine. Who doesn’t love new shampoo and conditioner, if you’re finding that your hair is a frizzy mess, you might just need one.

Here is a list of some lovely products and some different techniques you can try to help with the challenges of winter. The products are gifted and the links may be affiliate.

Why is Winter Such a Problem for Hair?

When we spend so much time in the colder months going from cold and damp to warm and dry, it’s no wonder our hair loses it’s lustre. The dry air dehydrates the scalp as well as the hair so you have to think about moisturising the scalp as well as the hair itself, after all the scalp is where the hair comes from, it makes sense to concentrate your efforts there too.

The wind will also contribute to the problem. Detangling is quite damaging to the hair cuticle. The cuticle is the outer layer of the hair, it is short of like roof tiles, forming overlapping scales which should lie flat in healthy hair. Unknotting the hair mashes up the cuticle and causes split ends.

Vitamin D deficiency can lead to hair loss. You probably know that there are only three ways humans can get vitamin D- from sunlight, by eating egg yolks and through supplementing. Sunlight is our main source of this extremely important vitamin (find out the results of my own vitamin D test here). It’s very important for our hair, as well as our general health, to think about vitamin D supplementation in the winter months.

What Makes a Good Winter Haircare Routine?

In winter, it helps to switch up your products and techniques to counteract environmental damage.

Here are some things you can do-

  • Add a weekly deep moisturising treatment
  • Switch to a moisturising shampoo and conditioner
  • Avoid damage while detangling by using a special brush
  • Make sure your diet is good- plenty of protein and a vitamin D supplement

Just like skin, hair needs hydration, moisture and nourishment. These can come in the form of humectants, oils, proteins and vitamins, so you want to look for products that contain appropriate ingredients. I’ll go through some great products in the next sections and break down why their ingredients are so great for wintertime.

Haircare Routine for Dry Winter Hair

  • Switch to a hydrating shampoo and conditioner like the Grow Gorgeous Intense Thickening, avoid rinsing with hot water
  • Use a weekly moisturising mask for extra conditioning
  • Use a gentle detangling hair brush to avoid further damage. Brushing wet hair causes damage. I like this brush from Wet Brush
Wet Brush Go Green Detangler

  • Reduce heat- turn down the heat in the shower when you’re rinsing your hair and avoid heat styling
